Leadership is a Two-Way Street

Leadership is a Two-Way Street: Think of someone who has done you a huge favour. Someone who was there for you at a time when you needed it most. Maybe a great mentor or a long-time friend. Your people are there for you each and every day, and you should be there for them too.

Effective leadership has always been a two-way street. Throughout history, the most respected and motivational leaders in most industries all have one thing in common — they treat their people with respect, inspiring them to return the favour. By leading by example and doing what you can to keep your people happy, you will build a work environment that encourages productivity and keeps your best from seeking greener pastures.

What can you do to earn your people’s respect?

  • Give them positive feedback and commend them for their success in the workplace.
  • Make sure to catch up with them frequently and ask questions about their life.
  • Make an effort to accommodate your people’s needs. Show them that you care.
  • If someone does you a favour, return it!
  • Take feedback seriously and give your people what they need to feel comfortable.
  • Frequently assess your policies and procedures to ensure nothing is outdated.
