LIVE2LEAD Ottawa Recap
On January 25th, 2019, leaders from across Ottawa came together at The Bridge for an exciting half-day event; LIVE2LEAD Ottawa left everyone in attendance motivated to be better and also with many practical tools and takeaways to consider. We learned from the varied experiences of the diverse group of speakers and there was certainly something for everyone.
John Maxwell - bestselling author, coach, and speaker - opened up the simulcast event with a look at the concept of “Leadershift”, the title of his upcoming book. Through comedy and real-life experiences, Maxwell engaged the audience to think about their own experiences and challenged them to evolve. We are all changing and growing, as is the world around us, and we need to constantly learn and change; this is the shift.
Next, Tyler Perry world-renowned producer, director, actor, screenwriter, playwright, author, songwriter, entrepreneur, and philanthropist - joined John Maxwell for a candid conversation about his own journey. Tyler Perry started in a life of poverty and has gone on to build an empire. For him, the shift occurred when he learned to embrace his role as a leader and to understand that power within that.
Carly Fiorina, the first woman to lead a FORTUNE 20 company as the CEO of Hewlett Packard, inspired the crowd with the story of her journey to the top. By understanding the true meaning of leadership, she was able to see that leadership isn’t about a title or position, but rather behaviours. Leaders change the order of things for the better.
Daniel Pink, a best-selling author, used science and statistics to back up his talk on the science of motivation. By referencing a variety of studies on mood and productivity, he provided great insight on how we work and ultimately designing our days around our peak and low points, as they can naturally vary drastically.
Debra Searle told the inspiring story of her (mostly) solo journey across the Atlantic ocean. Through comedy and emotion, she engaged everyone watching. Having very little experience rowing a boat, she was able to accomplish this feat through determination, visualizations, and by overcoming her fears. Her story was both inspirational and relatable and the tools she left us with could be used for overcoming obstacles of any type.
LIVE2LEAD gave leaders in attendance an inspirational push to continue pursuing their goals of becoming better leaders. True leadership isn’t defined by the title, but by the behaviours the leader chooses to exhibit. Those behaviours have the ability to inspire, motivate and lead people - that’s powerful.
